Sheila Elizabeth Curtis

Sheila Elizabeth Curtis (nee Cook) passed away peacefully at home on April 11th, 2018, surrounded by her loving family after a short but fierce battle with cancer at the age of 61. Born at the Pembroke General Hospital on February 6th, 1957, as part of a military family, Sheila spent her childhood in various locations, with her family eventually settling in the Deep River area. She joined the Pembroke Reserve Unit in her teens, where she met some of her best friends and her husband Paul, who she was happily married to for forty-one years and who will miss her dearly. Paul and Sheila raised two daughters Holly (Simon) and Heidi (Matt) who will also miss their Mom enormously. She spent thirty-seven years greeting children each morning with her big smile and infectious laugh while driving school bus and will be greatly missed by her "bus kids". Sheila spent the last seven summers camping at Pinewood Park in Cobden where she made wonderful memories with new friends, family, and especially her grandkids. The lights of her life were her five grandchildren: Darcy, Grady, Abbey, Felix and Tate, all of whom will miss their Nana dearly. She was predeceased by her father Raymond Cook and will be dearly missed by her mother Peggy Cook, her brothers Gregory (Trudy) and Tommy (Beverly), her mother-in-law Shirley Curtis, and the rest of her extended family.  Many thanks to relatives and friends who made her laugh and helped to ease her pain during the end of her difficult journey. In addition, the family would like to thank the staff of Deep River and District Hospital, Dr. Greenfield and his staff, Pembroke Regional Hospital, the Ottawa Hospital and the wonderful nurses from CCAC, especially nurses Lindsay Sarah, Erin and Virginia for the exceptional care she received in her last weeks of life. Friends may call at the Valley Funeral Home, Deep River on Saturday, April 14th 2018 from 10:00 to 10:50 am. A memorial service will be conducted in the chapel at 11:00 am, with a celebration of life at the Bear’s Den immediately following. In lieu of flowers,  donations can be made to the Renfrew County Animal Centre or the Ottawa Hospital Research Foundation (Cancer Research) www.ohfoundation.ca.

Dear Paul, Holly, Heidi and families. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Sheila was a wonderful person. I remember fondly the days of being next door neighbors in Mountain View Subdivision many years ago. Since then, she has always stopped to chat and share stories of her amazing family whenever and where ever we happened to meet. She was very proud of all of you. I know that she will be missed by many. Since I am currently living in Vienna, Austria, I cannot attend the memorial service, but please accept my sincere condolences and know that you will be in my thoughts.

I have such fond memories of being your neighbours in Mountain View Subdivision before moving in 1988. Dear Paul and Holly and Heidi and Families and also Mrs. Cook

John and I were very saddened to hear of Sheila’s passing yesterday. We both got to know Sheila through different ways. As a young girl in St. Mary’s School Playground many years ago - grade 4 I think, SHeila befriended me and was very kind and friendly to me. And then our connection continued once again at St. Mary’s School with having daughters, Heidi and Carolyn going through school in the same year. Sheila was always so pleasant and had cheerful words for everyone, especially the children she was in contact with through her daughters and also through her work. She will be missed and we extend our deepest sympathies to all your family.

Sheila was bestest bestest childhood friend, she lived across the street and we spent many afternoons on her front porch playing barbies.
We always kept in touch and I feel so sad that I never got to see her more often.
We always sent Christmas cards and she is the only one from Chalk River that I kept in touch with.
She was a good person and she will be missed.

Dear Paul, Holly and Heidi
I first met Sheila in High School. She convinced me to join the L&R Scots, and together with Susie, we had an amazing amounts of adventures and laughs and memories. Sheila was always at the heart of these. She was fun, witty, bright and beautiful, a natural story-teller, and yet she always made people feel special. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and I know she will be greatly missed by her family and so many friends. She has left you with a wonderful legacy. She left us too fast and too early. I am so sorry for your loss. Chantal
