Deacon Niilo Armas K. Kuisma

After a long courageous battle with cancer, on May 3rd at the Deep River and District Hospital, Niilo Armas Kuisma has joined the angels in heaven. Loving husband of Marilyn Dale Kuisma (Cull), beloved father to Niilo Kuisma (Javiera), Kathryn Martin (Robert), and Kristine Morrissey (Derrick). He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Kaitlin, Kyle, Chase, Mason, Norah and Olivia. Predeceased by his parents Aini and Armas Kuisma and brother to Jorma Kuisma and Gilda Flynn (Patrick). He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
Niilo was born in Finland and spent his younger years in Thunder Bay before moving to Sudbury to attend Laurentian University where he played University Football. He and Marilyn met and were married for 48 years.
Niilo was a life-long learner, having spent his career in Health and Safety predominantly in the mining sector. His passion for safety shone thru in his competitiveness around Mine Rescue. Niilo retired in 2010, after having worked in the far North. He led an active life having been involved in baseball, curling, cross country skiing, golf, biking, camping and coaching minor hockey. One of his personal accomplishments was finishing the Toronto marathon at age 40.
Later in his life, the Lord called him and he was ordained as a Deacon in the Diocese of Pembroke in 2004 and loved to contribute to the church community.
Special thanks to Dr. Terry McVey and the staff at the Deep River and District Hospital for the excellent care and compassion. Also thanks to Dr. Rakesh Goel and the staff at the Irving Greenburg Cancer Centre in Ottawa.
Reception of body at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Deep River, on Monday, May 7th at 1:30 pm, when visitation will begin at 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A Concelebrated Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday Morning May 8th, at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, with the most Reverend Michael Mulhall, Bishop of Pembroke, presiding. Followed by cremation. In memory of Deacon Niilo, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Deep River and District Hospital would be gratefully appreciated.

So sorry for your loss. Please find comfort in Jesus promise at John 5:28,29. “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.”
