I shall miss the conversations with Varley at our occasional meetings - mostly at Christmas times, when theoretical physics seemed often to agree with chemistry on matters of worldly and spiritual importance. With the family, I mourn his loss and my heartfelt condolences go to Sheila in particular, who must miss him terribly.

The news of Varley's death is sad. I will miss his dry wit and conversations relating to our families. He was fortunate to have family support during his last days and my condolences go to all his family but especially to Sheila. I know that this is a very difficult time for her.

I first knew Varley when we were part of a group attending beginner bridge lessons. When a few of us continue practicing together, his quiet sense of humour came to the fore as we made mistakes and laughed about them

Varley was a dedicated photographer. His one man show at the Deep River library last year was a feast for the eyes when he highlighted a viewpoint. Of course his quirky sense of humour was seen in some of the pictures. Varley had developed and framed all of the show, a remarkable accomplishment.

He will be missed by family and those who knew him well. My sympathy to Sheila and family

Dear Sheila & family. I am deeply saddened at Varley's passing. I had no idea that he was unwell. I remember the many times that Maureen & I square danced with you & Varley & what a true gentleman that he was.

It is very hard to see old friends passing & you and Varley were & are our friends.

Rest in peace Varley & may you find solace Sheila.

Dear Sheila, Linda, and Laura (and families,)
My sincerest condolences. I had visited you at the Thomas Street house many times over the years in the 70's and 80's. Varley always greeted me warmly whenever I stopped by.
Thinking of you,
Hazel Ward-Moreau

We are so sorry to hear of Varley’s passing. When we talked a couple of weeks ago we had not appreciated how ill he was. He was a companiable colleague in building 508 for many years. Theoretical Physics was a small and congenial group of scientists. Sadly those days are past.
Sincere condolences to Sheila and family.

Dear Sheila, Laura, and Linda,

I have just come across Varley's name on the Valley Funeral Home website. What a shock! My mind goes back to our family friendship in those happy years following Laura and Margaret's births. Then there was the kindness and patience of both of you trying to encourage this this left-footed couple to square dance!

Ivan and I send our sincere sympathy. Charlotte

Dear Sheila, Laura, Linda and Family,

We are very sorry to hear that Varley has passed away. We have many fond memories of the annual picnic across the Ottawa River and the warm friendship between our two families and many kindnesses over the years.

Varley was a well respected colleague, and Peter collaborated with him and other colleagues on projects related to Bose-condensed systems, 'Superfluid' Helium, and other phenomena. His deep knowledge and love for mathematics was apparent in all of their collaborations and in his work that contributed to and advanced the field of theoretical physics and neutron scattering and optics in particular.

We will miss Varley and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

With love,

The Martels and Laughtons
