Janette (Jinty) Smith Obituary

The next time you pour a glass of white wine, put a single ice cube in it for Jinty Smith, who passed away suddenly on Tuesday 14th January 2025. It is not an exaggeration to say that she is a true legend and will remain an unstoppable force through our collective memories, across the many generations of people whose lives she influenced.

One of Jinty’s greatest wisdoms was keeping her life simple to make time for what mattered and brought her joy. She’d tell you this did not include slaving over a hot stove! Her determination to live life to the fullest was made possible by surrounding herself with others. Whether in the gymnasium, auditorium or out coaching field hockey in her earlier life as a dynamic teacher at Mackenzie High School; competing on the tennis courts or golf course; singing in a choir or directing a school musical; teaching fitness classes to young and old alike; soaking up the sun at Pine Point Beach; enjoying happy hour or coffee out with one of the many gangs and clubs she was a part of, Jinty’s enthusiasm was infectious, just like her laughter, and she encouraged us all to be our best.

Her absence will be felt daily by her innumerable friends, and her daughter Kirstie Smith and son-in-law Chris Barschel, but particularly by her grandson Oliver Walker, who was such a source of pride, love and support for her. Alongside her departed husband, Donald Smith, and daughter, Vhairi Walker, Jinty will remain beloved within and beyond our community of Deep River.

We will miss her authenticity, the sound of her remarkable singing voice and of course her distinct Scottish accent that never faded. Through our actions we can keep her ever present by participating in community events, living a healthy and active life, and of course, through the sound of music.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the DRDH Medical Floor or the DRSSC (aka Deep River Yacht & Tennis Club). Celebration of life to be held on Saturday, August 2 from 1-4 pm at the Deep River Shoreline Sports Club.
