Obituary

Malcolm Jason Luyt

Malcolm departed peacefully at age 50 at Vancouver General Hospital in the company of family and friends following a stroke. Father to Hendrik, husband to Aileen, son to Jack and Louise, brother to Andrew and Erica and friend to many. Malcolm was a kind, creative, gentle soul with an electric spirit and a fiercely loyal heart.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Malcolm spent his early years in Windsor, Ontario. In 1982, the family moved to Deep River, Ontario where he grew up and developed his musical and artistic talents. While an introvert at heart, on stage he shone as a performer in such groups as bED (a.k.a. DFB, Vancouver) and Slam City Jam (Deep River).

In 2000, he set off on a new adventure with his future wife. The Pacific Ocean called and returned him to his post-high school haunt. Not one to sit idle, he attended Vancouver Community College, attained a certificate in print production and began working with Colortec Creative Print Solutions in 2002. At Colortec, he continued to nourish his creative soul by melding art and technology, transforming ideas into tangible realities.

On September 3, 2004, Aileen and Malcolm were married in Deep River, surrounded by family and friends. Malcolm was a dedicated and loving husband and in 2009 they welcomed a son, Hendrik.  After settling into family life, Malcolm continued to express his artistic vein through photography, recording, and manipulating sound through electronics. He loved to gather with his family and friends and with music playing would disappear into the kitchen to create a magnificent feast for all. Food and music were his love language - an experience we all shared.

His passing is mourned not only by his family but also by the many friends he cultivated during his life. As per Malcolm’s wishes, cremation occurred in Vancouver, British Columbia. A Celebration of Life will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a Donation to the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation.
