Mildred was a confident, intelligent, strong, and caring woman. She loved her family with a deep unconditional love.
Mildred grew up on a farm in the small town of Schutt, Ontario where she met her husband, Ken Walters. They married and moved to Chalk River, Ontario in 1966. Soon after, Mildred started working as a bank teller. She then had her two daughters, Elaine and Janice, who became her pride and joy. Her banking career flourished and in November 1987 she became the first woman to become a bank manager in the town of Deep River, Ontario. She also served as the board chair of the North Renfrew Long-Term Care Centre.
Mildred had many passions and hobbies over the years including golfing, cross-country skiing, shopping, camping at Mink Lake, playing horseshoes, fishing, vacationing in the summer, hosting parties, playing cards, knitting, organizing everyone and everything, talking for hours on the phone, surfing social media, decorating the house for Christmas, cheering on the Ottawa Senators, watching her grandchildren grow up, hugging her great-grandchildren, and spending time with family and friends.
She retired from the Bank of Montreal in June 2000 and after a short break, she worked part-time at Fraser’s Clothes Shop which she loved. In her retirement years she was always busy. She spent most of her time volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society where she would offer support and encouragement to patients on their cancer journeys. Mildred also coordinated drivers, of which Ken was one, to meet the appointment needs of patients through the Volunteer Transportation Program. Both Mildred and Ken were formally recognized for their efforts by the Governor General of Canada. Mildred also volunteered with the VON to file income tax returns for low-income individuals.
Mildred was the beloved wife of Ken Walters, loving mother to Elaine McGee (Ed) and Janice Carisse (Sean), sister to the late Norman Wiechenthal (Shirley), the late Wesley Weichenthal (Cora), the late Eric Weichenthal (Gladys), Gertrude Genrick (Roy), Freda Ziebarth (Ellard), and the late Lavern Weichenthal, adoring Nana to her grandchildren Konnor Levesque (Chrissa) and Paige Carisse, and her great-grandchildren Everleigh, Mirabella, Gia, and Mila Levesque. She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Weichenthal and daughter-in-law to the late Irvin and Pearl Walters. She will be missed and treasured by her sisters, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and her many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held September 6, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Deep River Community Church. Those wishing to make a charitable donation, please donate in Mildred’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Deep River and District Health – Closer to Home Campaign.
