Shelagh Ogilvie Obituary

Shelagh Mary Ogilvie

Shelagh died suddenly and unexpectedly in her home in Meilleur's Bay.

Please enjoy the tribute below written by a dear family friend, Jennifer Major.

Shelagh wrote the following words from Tennyson on her Facebook page April 16th, 2023, next to a photo of her beloved Doug (Jody):

"But O for the touch of a vanish'd hand,

And the sound of a voice that is still"

Now, it is we, the ones who are left behind to grieve, who will always long for the touch of her vanished hand and the sound of her voice, especially the phrase "aren't you a cheeky little thing?"

Although Irish, thank you very much, Shelagh Mary Dunn arrived in Conisbrough, England February 22nd, 1948, and immediately began to organize it into a more functional place, only stopping for tea and a good story, preferably at the same time. While attending hotel and restaurant management training in Shannon, she met, then married, that Canadian from Montreal, Douglas Ogilvie. They settled in the teeming metropolis of Deep River, where Doug built Shelagh a square timber castle, and they built themselves a wonderful life. They were legendary in the hospitality industry, and most famous for the idyllic lakefront retreat known simply as Ogilvie's, where thousands of people over the years would wake up in spotless, cozy cabins with crisply ironed sheets on the beds, a private lake to enjoy, and spectacular campfires that occasionally could be seen from space.

Lorne and Gail, with Lorne's lovely girls, Fiona and Maeve, and Gail's darling children, Brock and Laila, were the joys of Doug and Shelagh's lives. When Doug had the audacity to leave this earth far, far too soon, Shelagh carried on, but there was an awful, unforgiving cloud over her that brought neither relief from the blazing grief, nor raindrops to wash away her tears and heartache.

For her family and the many who loved Shelagh, her passing will come as a great shock. She was predeceased in death by her beloved husband of almost 50 years, Douglas, and siblings Patricia, Sean and Paul.  She leaves behind children Lorne and Gail (m. David), grandchildren Fiona, Brock, Maeve and Laila, and step granddaughter Diane, siblings Brendan, Kieran, Aidan, Margaret, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and a growing number of great nieces and nephew, and, of course, an untold collection of dear, loving friends both close by, and far across the earth.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 22 from 1-3:00 pm at the Deep River Sports and Shoreline Club (formerly Yacht and Tennis Club) .
