Vhairi Walker (nee Smith)  

1972-2022 

On Thursday 5th May, Vhairi Walker passed away at the Deep River hospital after a year-long fight against cancer.  Throughout this time, her incredible resilience and positive attitude toward life was unwavering. 

Vhairi was born and grew up in Deep River, enjoying everything her hometown had to offer. She was active in all sports but her passion for the outdoors drew her to skiing, hiking, kayaking, tennis and golf. Her beautiful voice led to starring roles in high school and community musicals and choirs. In her quiet and humble way, Vhairi gave back to and enriched the community she loved. As an organized and caring teacher and mother she believed children thrive in a structured environment. She had a gift for setting and helping children reach realistic expectations while celebrating what made them unique. As a volunteer she was committed to the DRYTC, managing the full coordination of the Junior Tennis program and ensuring that it thrived.  

Despite her love of Deep River, Vhairi’s small-town heart did not keep her from exploring - from studying in Scotland and working in the UAE to touring countries around the world, her confidence and curiosity led her to live a life of adventure. When not on the move (and only once ‘her jobs were done’) Vhairi liked nothing more than to relax on her back deck or front room with a good book. She believed in making the most of every moment, one day at a time. 

A selfless mother to Oliver, caring sister to Kirstie, devoted daughter of Jinty and the late Don Smith, loyal friend and colleague to many, she was deserving and appreciative of the outpouring of support she received in all forms, from near and far. She was known for being ever present and creating enduring, memorable experiences that we will treasure.  

We will miss her broad smile, colourful style and the determination of her stride through the streets and trails of town and the halls of school as she took on each day with calm tenacity.

Per the family's wishes, a private interment will be held at the Deep River cemetery and a public celebrate of her life at the DRYTC on Saturday August 13 from 4pm - 7pm.
