Eileen Mary Thurston

Eileen Mary Thurston (nee Crossing) of Deep River passed away on Sunday September 16, 2018 at the age of 93 years. Beloved wife of the late Warren Thurston, loving mother of Graham and his wife Susan, and Glenn and his wife Yvonne both of Ottawa, Paul of Vancouver, B.C., and David (Emma Barry) of Bragg Creek, Alberta. Cherished grandmother of Adrian, Galen, Angela, Elizabeth, Jacqueline and Katie. Predeceased by her brother Lawrence Berkley Crossing.
Born in Winnipeg, Eileen’s younger years were spent traveling the railways and highways of northern Ontario and Manitoba while her father worked for the CPR and Ontario Department of Highways.  She and Lawrence grew close as they attended many different schools and spent summers on work camps with their mother and father or visited family farms in Manitoba.
Eileen then hitchhiked throughout Europe with her good friend Vivian before arriving in the Upper Ottawa Valley in 1954 for a short adventure at AECL. During her stay she met her loving husband Warren and together they settled in Deep River and raised a family of four active boys.
Eileen was an avid skier, watercolour artist, birder and nature enthusiast, and was always keen for time on snow or water with her growing family. Weekends usually involved loading everyone into the van and heading out to ski, hike, explore, or for some water-related adventure near or far. As her sons began their careers Eileen devoted more time to her favourite hobby of watercolour painting with Warren and many other gifted local artists. This included more travel to places like Greenland, Haida Gwaii, Magdalen Islands, Spain, Greece and others. Her joy, talents, enthusiasm, and wonder were appreciated by all those who knew her and will be sorely missed.
The family appreciates both the care provided over the years by Dr. McVey and the support from the Flex program of North Renfrew Long-Term Care. In memoriam donations to the Deep River and District Hospital or North Renfrew Long-Term Care would be gratefully appreciated. A Memorial Service will be conducted at the Deep River Community Church on Saturday, October 13th at 1:00 pm.

We got to know your Mom/ grandma this year. We are so thankful we did. Such a wonderful woman! We'll miss her smile and her warmth. Luckily I bought one of her beautiful flower paintings years ago.

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. Mrs. Thurston was a customer of mine at the Rexall and she was the sweetest person. She always had a smile and would chat with us for a while. I remember delivering a medication to her one night and she invited me in and showed me all of your dad's artwork and her lovely home. I will miss her very much.

My deepest sympathies to you all on the loss of such a delightful lady. I met her through a small painting group and enjoyed her lively spirit and sense of humour. She was always gracious, a pleasure to know. One time I met her in Valumart shortly after the whole store had been rearranged. When I commented on this, she replied with a smile, "It's to make it more exciting!"

Please accept my deepest sympathy at the loss of your Mother. Eileen was such wonderful talented lady admired and respected by so many people in Deep River. Warren and Eileen were wonderful neigbours for 25 years. There were many memorable times between the Tallon boys and Thurston. Memories gone but nor forgotten, RIP lovely lady.

Graham, Glenn, Paul and David - our sincere condolences to you and your families. We feel very fortunate to have met Eileen a few times over the past several years, and each encounter was a pure pleasure. I wish we could have seen her sing with the choir we’ve heard so much about! Once we received a beautiful card with her artwork, and treasured it - thoughtful gestures like that are all too rare these days. Even these brief interactions with her felt quite special, so our hearts go out to those who were closest to her and whom I am sure will miss her deeply. Our love and sympathy to you all.

I am so sorry to hear Eileen is gone. I knew both Warren and Eileen from the skihills. Then Warren was my water colour teacher. Then I discovered Eileen was a very accomplished water colour artist of her own. And I spent at least one holiday in Hatteras while Warren and I and others windsurfed, Eileen enjoyed the surroundings and did some lovely paintings of the area. I enjoyed her company very much! A lovely and open person! So sorry for your loss!

Always looking for the next watercolour. We will miss Eileen, our good friend and kindred spirit.
